Who’s With Me?

Quotes from the RNC speeches that kept me up until 4:30 am one night/early morning last week, disturbed:

      “Drill, baby, drill!”
“[Obama] worked as a community organizer. What? He worked — I said — I said, OK, OK, maybe this is the first problem on the resume.”
“I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities…This world of threats and dangers is not just a community, and it doesn’t just need an organizer.”
“And speaking of Governor Palin, I am so tired of hearing about her lack of experience. I want to tell you folks something. She got more votes running for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, than Joe Biden got running for president of the United States.”

Dammit, after watching the audience from last week’s convention full of yee-haws and hillbilly chants (my apologies in advance for offending my conservative friends), I had several sleepless nights as I thought about how many of my own relatives would never vote for Obama simply because of his race.

Watching this movie over the weekend only heightened my fears. Never underestimate the power of rural America.

I attended the West LA Democratic Club’s Rally for O’bama the night of McCain’s speech (wasn’t his speech such a *yawn*?). I’m determined to quit stewing at home over the race to the White House and do something about it instead. I signed up to volunteer for phone banks for the next few months and am considering going to Ohio to volunteer, the closest swing state with the most electoral votes. I even thought about signing up for Camp Obama, but with all the upcoming weddings in my schedule plus the fact that I do not have 5 weeks to commit to being a Deputy Field Organizer it’s just not a realistic commitment for me.

Though checking out the latest Gallup poll disheartened me, I’m more determined than ever to channel this angry energy into something useful. I can’t sit still and watch this race without doing something about the candidate that excites, inspires, and amazes me.
