Disappointment
Drawing Restraint 9 turned out to be a major disappointment. I dunno. Maybe it was completely over my head, because I left the theater wondering what the hell Barney’s point was.
A review from the Hollywood Reporter summed it up:
Slow and repetitive, the film might be worth a few minutes of attention when encountered on a video screen in a museum display, but at 135 minutes it doesn’t provide much reward for a viewer’s rapt attention.
No dialogue combined with a lack of fluidity / visual appeal made for a major letdown. It was pretty strange all around… and gory too - I’ll spare you the details, but if you’re curious, read the Hollywood Reporter’s full review.
Don’t know much about Matthew Barney, and though I admire / enjoy Björk’s originality, this was way over the top.
