Drawing Restraint 9
Tonight’s the last night it’s playing at the NuArt in West L.A. Just bought tickets. I’m stoked.
A love story as only two such remarkable minds could conceive, ‘Drawing Restraint 9′ stars the artist and his longtime partner Björk as two occidental guests who board a Japanese whaling ship in Nagasaki Bay. The film has almost no dialogue but is marked by the fantastic theatricality that Matthew Barney fans expect. It includes a tanker truck filled with 25 tons of petroleum jelly; a parade of Japanese dancers; a tea ceremony in which Barney and Björk wear costumes inspired by Shinto marriage rites; the creation of a mysterious tub-shaped jelly sculpture; Japanese pearl-diving girls; and a climax of alarming and fantastic transformations. As expansive as the infinite Arctic seascape and as intimate as a tight, ambiguous embrace, ‘Drawing Restraint 9′ is an astonishingly original work of art.

It was a journey that I didn’t get… I tried really really hard to, I think I might have cause some irreversible damage trying to get it, but I didn’t get it…
It was a journey.
